Winter
Last few million years ago, there was a period of time when everyday was winter, freezing everything on Earth called “Ice age”. Generally, winter is the coldest season of the year between autumn and spring which is constituted by December, January, and February except countries at southern hemisphere like Australia where it has opposite seasons. Since it is the last season of four seasons, it has definition of decline, decay, and wane. Also, because winter is very cold, it means the period of time of coldness, barrenness, misery, and death. In this essay, I will explain what winter is, it’s description, comparison, negation, origin, causes, results and usage.
The origin of the word, “winter” comes from Germany which means “time of water”. The water represents rain and snow which refers to low temperature. This word became English in c888. How is winter created? In Greece Roman mythology, Persephone, who is daughter of Demeter (Goddess of grain and ground), was kidnapped by Hades, the God of underground and hell to make her his wife. She had to live in underground with Hades since she ate three pomegranate seeds. But for Zeus judgment, she can live half of the year outside which became summer and the other half inside
which also became winter. I didn’t know this word has such a sad mythology.
In scientific word, the Earth revolves around the sun standing on slanted angle of 23.5 degree. Since it has slanted angle, the thermal energy per area from the sun is decreased. In other word, as thermal energy spreads out, the temperature becomes lower than that in summer. That's how winter gets created. As people usually recognize, in winter, temperature usually falls down below zero degrees Celsius, 32 degrees Fahrenheit. All the lakes and most of water freeze to ice with snow and winds blowing strong and hard. People tend to wear thick cloths and get heated in the warm house.
In my personal experience, to compare this word to other words, I think winter is a crisis. In other word, winter is a thorny and tough hill in the way of people’s path that we must go over with. In a year, we get to spend through four seasons. Spring, summer and fall, have either warm days or cool days that is very comfortable and cozy. However, winter, the last season we get to meet, has freezing days. The weather freezes water into the ice, wind blow strong, it also gives us cold snow which harms many people. Also, in winter, there are no plants and vegetable life growing so people will have less food. All of these are risk that we must face against in order to survive
during the winter. But after the pain, spring comes back and we would meet another safe time.
To negate the word winter, it is not playing beach ball staring at bikinied girls. It is not peace that we enjoy in a warm cozy weather. Also, winter is not putting sun cream on skin thinking about playing in cool swimming pool with excitement in a hot summer day. Let it be stated here that it is not eating watermelon with drinking iced cool-aid enjoying sun ten. Winter has no worries of melting ice cream. It can’t be situation wearing only underwear in house having air conditional on.
For the usage of the winter, there are a lot of exciting sports, thankful holidays, and beautiful constellation. One of the great winter sports that make people forget about the coldness is ski. Also ice-skating is one of a greatest sport. Many children like to go sledding feeling joyous. In winter, there are a lot of holidays too. Thanksgiving is holiday when people celebrate the end of harvest. Christmas is most famous holiday in winter which is Jesus’ birthday. For starting a New Year, there’s another most known holiday in the world called New Year. For winter constellation, you can see Cancer, Canis Major, Crater, Gemini, Hydra, Leo, Lynx, Monoceros, Orion, etc, at night.
In conclusion, winter, the last season in the year, have shortest and coldest day on December, January and February. It snows and freezes in winter. In these days, scientist discovered that the Earth is on dangerous situation called “Global Warming”. This nature disaster is caused by environmental pollution which makes average of temperature increase. In the other word, the Earth is getting hotter and hotter. In soon enough, there might be a time when winter disappears. To prevent this, we should get as less pollution as we can. How do we pollute the environment less? Well, I am pretty sure that you learned at school. So let’s try not to pollute the air and save the Earth so we can always greet our winter!
